Where is The Book Centre? It’s in a large town, in the City Square.

How large is the shop? 10,000 square feet approximately.

How many books do you have on display at any one time? We have 140 bays of books with about 50,000 on display.

How many people work there? Thirty to thirty-five.

What kinds of books do you sell? New books, school books and books in other languages.

How long have you had the business? Forty years.

Where do your customers come from? They are mainly locals with seasonal tourists.

How would you describe the current state of the book trade in Ireland? Do you feel optimistic or pessimistic? Fairly optimistic.

What do you most enjoy about being a bookseller? Interacting with the customers.

Is there anything that you don’t like about being a bookseller? No.

How do you choose which books to stock? Through representatives.

Do you organise events in your shop, such as book signings? Yes, many. For example, the photographs of the bride and the band on this page are from a recent ‘Wedding Extravaganza’ event which featured a fashion show and twenty exhibitors. The event was very successful and well attended. The band playing are the Waterford Gypsy Jazz Ensemble, who have played at several events in store over the last two years.


Which books are selling well at the moment? Children’s, paperback fiction and non-fiction.

Do you sell books online? No

How do you get your books from the UK? From the publishers themselves.

What are you reading at the moment? Guns of August by Barbara Tuchmaan.

How long have you been using Batch? Several years.

How does Batch help your business? Batch is extremely fast and efficient and easy to use. It cuts down on printing cheques and postage costs. It allows easy access for printing copy invoices. It makes credit claims more efficient. There’s only one payment to Batch so it makes bank reconciliations easier. The importation of statements and payments to Sage is very easy. It provides secure user privacy.


Is there anything we could do to improve our service to you? Make communication with suppliers dealing with Batch easier.
